The Nyiragongo Volcano in DR Congo is threatening to erupt on 22nd May 2021 as the sky around the active volcano turns red like a fire. This is one disaster after another as Goma town of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is under scare of an upcoming volcano eruption characterized with a strong smell of Sulphur and large flames of fire seen at a distance sparking out of the active mountain.
The town of Goma is located at the border between Rwanda’s lake Kivu and Congo and is the crossing border point between the two countries. The city has a large airport and a is a hub for a number of humanitarian organizations and a United nations (UN) peace keeping base.
The locals are fleeing the area with their belongings to neighboring communities and trying to cross borders into area of lake Kivu in Rwanda. This comes as a great disaster for the people of the Congo who haven’t yet recovered from the covid-19 pandemic which come right after they had just received a vaccine for Ebola virus which had been killing large numbers of people.

Mount Nyiragongo Volcano has erupted more than 40 times with the last erupted 19 years back in 2002 leaving Goma town in complete ruined, hundreds of people dead and property destroyed. Today the town is composed of a black rock from the magma a clear reminder of the lava flow all over the city. The worst of the Nyiragongo eruption was in 1977 with the highest number of destructions and over 600 people killed
Nyiragongo volcano is one of the eight mountains with in the Virunga conservation region which encircles a small portion of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo coprising of a number of other volcanoes namely mount Bisoke, Karsimbi, Muhabura volcano, Sabyinyo, mount Gahinga and Nyamuragira volcano. Of the 8, Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira are active both located in Eastern democratic Republic of Congo.
